WASHINGTON – With turnovers mounting and George Washington capitalizing on the other end, the game began to snowball away from the George Mason women's basketball team and became a storm it couldn't escape.
The Patriots suffered an 80-49 loss to the Colonials in the latest chapter of the Revolutionary Rivalry on Saturday at the Charles E. Smith Center. Mason (13-15, 6-9 Atlantic 10) was on the wrong end of a 23-0 run in the second quarter that essentially put the game out of reach.
After taking a one-point lead on a
Kara Wright layup with 6:27 left in the period, the Patriots failed to score the rest of the half. On top of it, Mason committed nine turnovers in the quarter – after zero in the opening period – as the Colonials suffocated the Patriots with their full-court trap defense. George Washington (19-8, 12-3) took advantage, scoring 14 points off the miscues.
The flurry resulted in a 44-22 halftime deficit for Mason, which wouldn't get the margin under 20 after that. George Washington increased the lead to as many as 37 points in the second half. Mason finished with 17 turnovers as the Colonials notched 11 steals and scored 28 points off turnovers. The Patriots also shot just 29.5 percent from the field, including 2 of 19 from 3-point range.
Wright had a game-high 15 points for the Patriots, scoring 11 points after halftime. Freshman
Jacy Bolton recorded her second career double-double with 14 points (10 coming in the first quarter) and a career-high tying 10 rebounds.
The Patriots wrap up the regular season against Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Philadelphia. Mason is currently the No. 10 seed for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship, which begins with first-round games on Feb. 25-26. The No. 3 through No. 8 seeds host first-round games on campus sites and the top two seeds receive first-round byes before the tournament shifts to the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va., on March 3-5.
