– George Mason University's men's volleyball team will have its first EIVA-exclusive weekend as it heads north for a conference doubleheader against Harvard.
Mason continues a six-match road swing which didn't start too well with the Patriots dropping contests to No. 13 Ball State and Fort Wayne a fortnight ago. Mason last met Harvard in the 2016 EIVA Championship semifinal, in which the Patriots were relentless and cruised to a 3-0 win before claiming the conference title two days later. However, the team has lost four-straight regular-season contests against the Crimson and will seek a consecutive victory against the Ivy League school for the first time since 2013.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Harvard has not had as busy of a start to the season as Mason and has played three fewer matches than the Patriots. The Crimson enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record and will complete a five-match home stand with the doubleheader. Both of the team's wins took place at home, including a four-set triumph over Fort Wayne, which swept Mason two weeks ago.
The Crimson's attack is led by players from the opposite sides of the experience spectrum – freshman Erik Johnsson (2.63 kills/set) and senior Casey White (2.52). White has three more kills with 53, but Johnsson has team-best three service aces this season. Junior Brad Gretsch (2.15 kills/set) is the third Harvard player who averages over two kills per set. White is the Crimson's best defender with 2. 52 digs per set and with 17 digs more than starting libero Chase Howard. Sophomore Trevor Dow (1.06 blocks/set) is the leading blocker on a Harvard team that averages 2.12 roofs per set.
