FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team will honor its seniors in Friday night's match against Saint Louis. The seniors being honored are defensive specialist
Ashley Mennes, middle blocker
Sydney Fanoga, middle blocker
Jordan Glass and setter
Kelly Schaller.
Mason will also hold a special ceremony for
Catie Espinoza Saturday afternoon against Dayton to recognize her reaching the 1,000 dig milestone – a feat she accomplished last time out against George Washington.
For both matches fans are encouraged to arrive early to see both pre-match ceremonies.
SERIES HISTORY
The Patriots played Saint Louis and Dayton earlier this season on the weekend of Oct. 20-22. Mason lost both matches in straight sets. The Patriots are in search of their first win against both programs, checking in at 0-7 against Saint Louis and 0-8 against Dayton.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Three blocks of any kind will give Sydney Fanoga 300 for her illustrious career in the green and gold. The co-captain has gone six consecutive matches recording at least one block.
- Last time out, the Patriots dropped a four-set match to George Washington. Bailey Williams led the Patriots with 21 kills – her third match of at least 20 kills this season.
- Williams ranks sixth in the A-10 in kills per set at 3.17. For A-10 only play the sophomore is third at 3.37 kills per set.
- In her last three matches, Williams has averaged 4.73 kills per set.
- In this season alone so far, the total blocks Jordan Glass has recorded (58) is more than triple the amount she had in her previous three seasons combined (26).
- Glass has recorded at least one block in 19 of 25 matches she's appeared in this season - including at least one in 14 straight matches.
- Maddie French had a career night in her last appearance against George Washington. The Richmond, Va. native posted a career high 12 kills and a season high 13 digs en route to her first double-double in two years.
- French's 12.5 points against the Colonials was the second highest single-match total of her career.
- Licie Leite also registered the best individual performance of her career against GW on Nov. 3. That contest featured her single-match high in kills, hit percentage and assists, as well as picking up her first two career blocks.
- Catie Espinoza is six digs shy of reaching 400 in a season for the second consecutive year. Her career total is now up to 1,013.
- Espinoza is climbing the program leaderboard with her sights set on Joy Kingsley-Ibeh, who ranks fifth in program history with 1,098 career digs.
- While she's unlikely to pass Kingsley-Ibeh this season, a strong weekend of digs will set the tone and dictate how many matches she'll need next year to crack the top-five.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Saint Louis Billikens | 11-14 (8-4 A-10)
The Billikens have won their last two matches thanks in large part to reigning A-10 Player of the Week in Sien Gallop. The sophomore outside hitter posted double-doubles in each of Saint Louis' matches last weekend, doing it with a .319 hit percentage. In addition to Gallop, the Billikens have two other players averaging over 3.40 points per set this season. Maya Taylor is second on the team at 3.63, and Lauren Leverenz is third at 3.46.
Dayton Flyers | 20-7 (11-1 A-10)
[Stats and records as of Friday]
Minus a five-set loss to first place VCU on Oct. 29, the Flyers are perfect in A-10 play and will serve as the Patriots final match of the season following the Friday night match of Dayton at George Washington. The Flyers attack is led by Lauren Bruns and Amber Erhahorn. Bruns is fourth in the A-10 in kills per set (3.40) and Erhahorn's .452 hit percentage is first in the conference and fourth in the nation.
