FAIRFAX, Va. – For three quarters, defense and rebounding carried the George Mason women's basketball team.
And then the offense broke through in the fourth quarter.
Four players scored in double figures and the Patriots held Southeast Missouri State to less than 10 points in two quarters to set the tone in a 57-38 victory on Saturday at EagleBank Arena in the consolation bracket of the Preseason WNIT. Mason scored 19 points in the final quarter of a low-scoring affair to pull away for its third straight win - its longest winning streak in nearly three years.
The Patriots (3-1) won both consolation games of the Preseason WNIT held at EagleBank Arena on Friday and Saturday. At 3-1, they're also off to their best start since the 2014-15 season.
After SEMO (2-2) made the first basket of the game, Mason never trailed. The Patriots led comfortably by more than eight points for most of the game.
Leading by eight after three quarters, the Patriots opened the final period with back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore
Sarah Kaminski and freshman
Nicole Cardano-Hillary. That sparked a 10-2 run that was capped off by another Kaminski trey for a 48-32 lead with 7:25 left.
The Patriots never looked back as SEMO scored just eight points in the final quarter. This was coupled with a four-point first quarter by the Redhawks, who shot only 27.5 percent. Mason also struggled offensively, making just 29.6 percent of its shots from the field and committing 22 turnovers. But the Patriots outrebounded SEMO 52-29 and forced 19 turnovers.
Sophomore
Jacy Bolton and Cardano-Hillary each scored a game-high 14 points. Graduate transfer
Natalie Butler posted her third straight double-double and 29th of her career with 12 points and 15 rebounds in addition to three blocks and three assists. Sophomore
Sarah Kaminski added 11 points and senior
