Patriots Host VCU On Senior Day

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team looks for its fifth straight home win on Sunday, hosting VCU with the kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. on Senior Day at George Mason Stadium.

Mason (5-8-1, 2-2-1 A-10) scored two late goals at Duquesne on Thursday, but fell 3-2 to the Dukes at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.  Senior Niomi Serrano scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 80th minute, while junior forward Nia Elbeck tallied her first goal of the season in the 89th minute.

The Patriots have converted on all four of their penalty kicks over the first 14 games.  Serrano has scored both of her goals this season on penalty kicks.

The Patriots have outscored opponents by a combined score of 13-4 during their four-game home winning streak.

Mason will honor its eight seniors in a pregame ceremony before the match against VCU on Sunday.

Junior forward Emily Littell is tied for the team lead in goals (3) and paces the Patriots in assists (6) and points (12), all career-highs.  She is tied for the conference lead in assists (6).

Junior forward Rebecca Callison is tied for the team lead with a career-high three goals and is third on the squad with a career-best seven points, while freshman Amanda Nhek is second on the team in assists (4) and points (8).

Senior forward Erin Mitchell, who is tied for second on the team with two goals, ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 in shots (38).  Freshman midfielder Kayla Hamric is tied for sixth in the A-10 in shots (35).

The Patriots rank third in the Atlantic 10 in goals (21), second in shots (231) and third in shots per game (16.5).  Mason has taken the second-most corner kicks in the conference (100). 

Mason has had 13 players record a goal and 17 players register at least one point through 14 games, while five different players have scored a game-winning goal. 

Freshman goalkeeper Louisa Moser (10 games/836 minutes) has a 1.83 goals against average and has registered 32 saves.  Junior goalkeeper Morgan Symmers (6 games/480 minutes) has a 1.69 goals against average and has recorded 12 saves.

Mason defeated VCU 4-1 on Oct. 20, 2016 at SportsBackers Stadium in Richmond, Va.  Mitchell found the back of the net twice, Williams scored a goal and Emily Littell had a goal and an assist in the victory over the Rams last season.

SCOUTING VCU

VCU has an overall record of 6-3-3.  The Rams are 3-0-3 at home and 3-3-0 on the road.

Rams sophomore Alyssa Tallent scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute as VCU stayed unbeaten at home with a 1-0 win over Saint Joseph's on Thursday.

VCU has scored 19 goals and surrendered just nine through the first 12 games of the season.  The Rams have outscored opponents 11-2 in the first half of play.

The Rams rank second in the Atlantic 10 in shots per game (17.3), third in total shots (208) and fourth in goals per game (1.5).

Sophomore Amanda Tredway leads the team in goals (4) and points (9).  Junior Julia Suarez and Tallent are tied for second on the squad in goals (3) and points (8).  Tallent is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in game-winning goals (3).

Junior goalkeeper Audrey Sanderson (12 games/1142 minutes) has made 42 saves and has a 0.71 goals against average.  Sanderson ranks third in the conference in shutouts (6), goals against average (0.71) and fewest goals allowed (9).

CORNER KICK

The George Mason women's soccer team has been recognized for their excellence in the classroom, named 2016-17 College Team Academic Award recipients by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced on Thursday. 

Teams with a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher earned the honor.  This is the ninth time the women's team has earned the award.  Mason was one of 204 schools that had both the men's and women's soccer programs recognized.
