FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team heads back on the road in search of its first conference win of the season.
The Patriots play Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Philadelphia. Both teams are coming off overtime road losses and looking for their first Atlantic 10 Conference win.
The Hawks (2-6-3, 0-1 A-10) dropped a 3-2 decision to Dayton on Wednesday, allowing a game-winning goal in the 93rd minute. Saint Joseph's has lost five of six and last won on Sept. 6 against Manhattan. Senior Matt Crawford leads the team with five goals and ranks first in the Atlantic 10 with 35 shots.
Mason (5-3-2, 0-1-1) also fell in overtime on Wednesday, suffering a 1-0 setback at Revolutionary Rival George Washington. The game was scoreless through 90 minutes but the Colonels scored 55 seconds into overtime on a breakaway to snag a 1-0 victory. The loss snapped a three-game unbeaten streak for the Patriots, who tied defending league tournament champ Fordham 1-1 in the A-10 opener last Saturday.
The loss to George Washington was the first time Mason had been shut out this season. The Patriots lead the A-10 with 2.00 goals a game and are tied for 20th in Division I. Senior captain
Henning Dirks ranks first in the conference with eight goals and is tied for third in the country in points (22) and points per game (2.2).
The Patriots lead the all-time series 2-1-2 but suffered their first loss to Saint Joseph's last October. Junior Derek MacKinnon scored the game-winner in the second half on an assist from Crawford.
