Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The George Mason women's soccer team scored a pair of late goals on Thursday night, but the Patriots fell to Duquesne 3-2 at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Mason (5-8-1, 2-2-1 A-10) and Duquesne (8-3-2, 4-1-0 A-10) were scoreless after the first half.
The Patriots controlled the play in the first 10 minutes of the contest, with juniors
Emily Littell and
Rebecca Callison each recording a shot on goal in the fast start. Freshman goalkeeper
Louisa Moser stopped all four shots that she faced in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Dukes took command in the second half, scoring three goals in a span of 17 minutes.
Duquesne jumped in front 1-0 in the 59th minute when junior Casey Aunkst converted on a penalty kick. Dukes junior Katie O'Connor then netted her fifth goal of the season in the 64th minute to increase the advantage to 2-0 and freshman Lauren Bell tallied in the 76th minute to make the score 3-0.
Mason senior
Niomi Serrano put the Patriots on the board in the 80th minute, converting on a penalty kick to cut the Dukes lead to 3-1. Serrano has scored both of her goals this season on penalty kicks.
In the 89th minute, junior forward
Nia Elbeck scored her first goal of the season into the lower left corner from 10 yards out to make the score 3-2.
The Patriots finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots, including 9-8 in shots on goal. Mason had three corner kicks and Duquesne had one.
Senior
Abby Downey led Mason with two shots on goal. Moser (4-4-1) made five saves in the game.
The Patriots are back in action on Sunday, hosting VCU at 1 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
