FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team is back on the road to face Duquesne on Thursday night with the kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Mason senior
Abby Downey scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute against Richmond and junior goalkeeper
Morgan Symmers made two saves, recording her first NCAA win in the Patriots 1-0 overtime victory over the Spiders on Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
The Patriots finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots, including 7-2 in shots on goal. Mason (5-7-1, 2-1-1 A-10) improved to 2-1-1 in games decided in overtime and extended its home winning streak to four games.
Junior
Emily Littell is tied for the Atlantic 10 lead and tied for fourth in the nation in assists (6). She is also tied for third in the conference in points (12). With three assists in Mason's 4-3 win over George Washington on Sept. 21, Littell is one of only 31 players in the nation with three or more assists in a game this season.
Junior forward
Rebecca Callison is tied for the team lead with a career-high in goals (3) and is tied for second on the squad with a career-best seven points. Freshman
Amanda Nhek is second on the team in assists (3) and tied for second in points (7).
Senior
Erin Mitchell, who is tied for second on the team with two goals, is tied for the most shots in the Atlantic 10 (37).
"Erin has been a standout player for us," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "A lot of our attack goes through her. It's a product of her getting in the right position to receive the ball and the rest of the players having a lot of confidence in her."
The Patriots rank second in the Atlantic 10 in shots (217) and third in shots per game (16.6). Mason has taken the second-most corner kicks in the conference (97) and ranks fourth in total goals scored (19). After scoring just two goals over the first six games of the season, the Patriots have scored 17 goals over their last seven contests.
Mason has had 12 players record a goal and 15 players register at least one point over the first 13 games, while five different players have scored a game-winning goal.
"We never really want to have our team just being built around one or two players," Bramble said. "Then we become a little bit too predictable and we become a team that's easy to shut down. No opponent knows on any given day who is going to score goals for us and that's by design and I'm happy to see it unfolding that way."
Freshman goalkeeper
Louisa Moser (9 games/746 minutes) has a 1.69 goals against average and has registered 27 saves. Symmers (6 games/483 minutes) has a 1.67 goals against average and has recorded 12 saves.
Duquesne is 3-0-0 all-time against Mason, with each of the three victories by a single goal. Last season, Duquesne scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play in overtime in a 1-0 victory over the Patriots on Oct. 13, 2016 at George Mason Stadium.
"They have a lot of good qualities on both sides of the ball," said Bramble of the matchup with the Dukes. "They have two really special attacking players who tend to get most of their points and they're a team that's really good in possession. Defensively, they don't surrender too many goals and they've proven to be well-balanced and solid on both sides of the ball. Playing at their place makes it a little bit more of a challenge and we certainly know what we're up against Thursday night."
SCOUTING DUQUESNE
Duquesne has an overall record of 7-3-2. The Dukes are 5-1-1 at home and 2-2-1 on the road.
Junior forward Katie O'Conner scored the only goal of the game in Duquesne's 1-0 victory at Fordham on Sunday, leading the Dukes to their first win in the Bronx since 2010. O'Conner was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week after recording a goal and an assist over two games last week.
Junior goalkeeper Kyra Murphy, who made nine saves over two games in back-to-back 1-0 shutout victories, earned A-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Dukes have won their first two conference home games, defeating Saint Louis 2-1 on Sept. 24 and VCU 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 27 at Rooney Field.
Senior forward Linnea Faccenda is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in goals (5) and points (13). O'Conner, who needs three goals to become Duquesne's all-time leader, ranks second on the Dukes in goals (4) and points (10). She is tied for third in the A-10 in game-winning goals (3).
Murphy (12 games/1133 minutes) ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in saves (71), fourth in goals against average (0.87) and is tied for second in the conference in shutouts (5).
CORNER KICK
