FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team is back on the road for a weekend contest against Davidson on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, N.C.
Mason (7-8-1, 4-2-1 A-10) scored two early goals against Massachusetts on Thursday in a 3-1 win over the Minutewomen at George Mason Stadium.
Junior forward
Rebecca Callison scored in the fourth minute and later added an assist, senior
Daniela Neves netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 17th minute and freshman
Kayla Hamric tallied in the 71st minute of play.
"I think that speaks to the depth of our team this year," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "We've got players who are making significant contributions to the success we've had recently. What we really have focused on a lot is getting our shots on target and since that has increased, we've started to score a lot more goals and win more games as a result."
Mason has a record of 6-0-0 when scoring the first goal of the game. The Patriots have an overall record of 7-2-1 over their last 10 games, with 23 goals scored and 13 allowed.
The Patriots have won six straight home games, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 17-5. The six-game home winning streak is the longest that Mason has recorded in 19 years and tied for the fourth-longest in program history.
Mason improved to 4-0-0 against Atlantic 10 opponents at George Mason Stadium, with victories over George Washington, Richmond, VCU and UMass.
Callison leads the team in goals (4) and is second in points (10), both career highs. Junior forward
Emily Littell is tied for second on the team in goals (3) and paces the Patriots in assists (6) and points (12), all career-highs. She is tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in assists (6).
Freshman
Amanda Nhek is second on the team in assists (5) and tied for third in points (9). Nhek's five assists are the most by a freshman in the A-10 and tied for third-most overall in the conference.
Senior forward
Erin Mitchell, who is tied for second on the team in goals (3) and third in points (9), ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 in shots (44). Hamric ranks sixth in the A-10 in shots (39).
The Patriots are third in the Atlantic 10 in goals (25), second in shots (255) and third in shots per game (15.9). Mason has taken the second-most corner kicks in the conference (116).
Mason has had 13 players record a goal and 17 players register at least one point through 16 games, while five different players have scored a game-winning goal.
"I think that's a direct result of the variety of how we can attack," said Bramble. "A lot of the time we spend attacking from the wide positions, but we also have the ability to combine up the middle or even play a little bit direct. By attacking in a variety of ways, that features the strengths and skillsets of different individuals."
Freshman goalkeeper
Louisa Moser (12 games/1016 minutes) has a 1.59 goals against average and has registered 40 saves. Junior goalkeeper
Morgan Symmers (6 games/480 minutes) has a 1.69 goals against average and has recorded 12 saves.
The Patriots defeated Davidson 4-0 on Oct. 16, 2016 at George Mason Stadium. Mitchell scored three goals in the second half to record her first career hat trick, while
Abby Downey finished the game with a goal and two assists.
This will be Mason's second visit to Alumni Stadium in Davidson, N.C. The Patriots defeated the Wildcats 2-1 on Oct. 18, 2015 in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Mitchell scored Mason's first goal of the game in the 16th minute and forward
Nia Elbeck tallied the game-winner in the 88th minute of play.
The Patriots will be looking for their first conference road win of the season when they take the field against the Wildcats on Sunday.
"It is a huge challenge, but it's really important," Bramble said. "We've only gotten one point out of three away games right now. That has to be a huge focus of ours with two more away games left to play in our season, we have to try to find a way to play well enough to win one of these games on the road."
