Overall it took a team effort to defeat Davidson in straight sets.
"Tonight was an exciting win for Mason volleyball against a very talented Davidson team," head coach
Aylene Ilkson said. We played extremely consistent and it showed on all sides of the ball. I am proud that the team competed as hard as they did and I'm hoping we can continue to push ourselves day in and day out."
The Patriots traded points with the Wildcats early in the first set, a set that saw seven ties and two lead changes making the score 11-11. After that the Patriots strung together a 12-4 run that put them in control and was enough of a cushion to cruise to victory. It was evident from get-go that Glass was on her game as she totaled four kills in the opening set.
Set two was filled with notable runs from both teams, such as 11-4 and 7-2 ones for Mason as well as 10-2 and 6-2 ones for Davidson. Scoring 25 points wasn't going to be enough in the second set as the teams dueled into the late 20's. With the score tied at 29, freshman setter
Emily Konchan picked up two service aces in a row giving Mason the victory. Konchan has notched two services aces four times this season, a mark that remains her single-match high.
Looking to close things out in the third set, Davidson was the team that had the strong start, jumping out to a 10-7 lead. The momentum didn't last long as Mason went on a 6-0 run behind three
Bailey Williams kills in that stretch. Davidson battled back in the middle of the set holding leads of 16-14 and 19-18, but the Patriots took over, scoring nine of the last 14 points.
Maddie French picked up two kills down the stretch to compliment Glass, who notched the kill to start the aforementioned scoring run and the kill to finish it off, giving Mason a 3-0 match win.
The Patriots are right back at it Saturday at 7 p.m. to face VCU, winners of 17 in a row. For tickets call (703) 993-3270 or click
