Senior
Erin Mitchell nearly put the Patriots in front in the 19th minute, but hit the crossbar from 15 yards out.
The Patriots controlled the play in the second half and outshot the Spiders 13-4, but neither team could find the back of the net. Junior
Rebecca Callison was turned away with under three minutes to play and senior
Kelsey Young was stopped by the Spiders goalkeeper as time expired.
"That second-half performance for us today was really good," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "It's everything that we want to be. We had a lot of people on the ball and causing them problems."
In overtime, Downey netted her second goal of the season in the 97th minute, scoring into the lower right corner of the net from 10 yards out to lift Mason to the 1-0 victory.
"I felt pretty confident at that point because I could tell that she was composed," Bramble said. "Abby was outstanding for us today. She played three different positions in the game and the composure she showed to put that goal away and end the game is what we've been missing a little bit from an attacking team."
The Patriots improved to 2-1-1 in games decided in overtime and extended their home winning streak to four straight games.
Mason finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots, including 7-2 in shots on goal. Seven different players recorded a shot on goal for Mason in the game. The Patriots had 11 corners and the Spiders had two.
Symmers (1-4-0) made two saves in the second half and earned her first collegiate win.
"It's really well-deserved," said Bramble. "I couldn't be happier for Morgan and proud of the progress that she's made. We were happy to get Morgan in the game today and she was very good."
The Patriots are back in action on Thursday at Duquesne with the kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
