ST. LOUIS – On the road against the Atlantic 10 Conference preseason favorite, the George Mason women's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered.

The Patriots suffered an 89-50 loss to Saint Louis on Wednesday night at the Chaifetz Arena. The Billikens, who won a share of the regular-season conference title last year and are picked to win the league again this year, never trailed in snapping Mason's two-game win streak.

"We're going to have to show some resiliency and get ourselves ready for Fordham," head coach Nyla Milleson said. "Saint Louis is such an efficient offensive team and we knew that. In order to beat them, you have to score with them. We dug ourselves a hole and then got on our heels offensively. We have to reset and get ready for Saturday. One game is not going to define us."

The Patriots (9-7, 2-1 A-10) scored a season-low 50 points in their most lopsided loss of the season. Saint Louis (12-3, 2-0) jumped out to a 10-point lead after the opening quarter. The Billikens pushed the lead to 44-26 by halftime and led by as many as 42 in the second half.

SLU was aided by 12 3-pointers, 26 assists on 31 made field goals and only seven turnovers. The Billikens shot 44.3 percent from the field and had four players score in double figures, led by a double-double from Sadie Stipanovich (15 points, 15, rebounds). Jackie Kemph, who ranks third in the country in assists per game (7.7), dished out 11 assists.

Mason shot just 28.1 percent from the field and only 13.3 percent form beyond the arc. The Patriots were also outrebounded 46-39. Senior Kara Wright led the team with 14 points. Seniors Tiffany Padgett and Sylvia Maxwell each scored 10 points. Padgett also had a team-high eight rebounds.

Mason returns to Fairfax to start a three-game homestand with a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday against Fordham at EagleBank Arena.
