The George Mason women's tennis team opened the spring season at the VCU 4+1 tournament and split the two matches. The Patriots defeated Morgan State and fell to Atlantic 10 conference foe VCU in the matches held in Richmond.
In the 3-2 victory against the Bears, the Patriots earned the doubles point. The team of Scarlett Walston and Olivia Lacy-Thompson defeated Yvonne Peters-Washington and Chole Kabamba in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. The close match came down to senior captain Morgan Yang's match. She saved two match point in the third set to force the tie-breaker. She won the tie-breaker 7-5.
Mason struggled against the 2016 Atlantic Champion VCU team, losing all matches in two sets. The Patriots Walston lost a close first set 7-5 in the No. 1 singles position.
"These were tough first matches of the spring season. I think our players battled very well. We still have some work to do to get to where we want to be but I am very optimistic with this group of young players."
Mason moves to 3-1 on the 2016-17 season and travels to the Naval Academy next Saturday for a 2 pm match.
