Patriots Downed by Army and Boston University

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The George Mason women's and men's swimming and diving teams were swept by Army and Boston University on Saturday at Crandall Pool in West Point, N.Y.

The Mason women's team fell to the Black Knights 187-106 and suffered a 188-109 loss to the Terriers, while the Patriot's men's team was defeated by Army 218-79 and bested by Boston University 164-135.

On the women's side, Mason compiled four first-place finishes. 

Junior Amy Tansill won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.70), with junior Sarah Brallier fourth (1:07.01) and classmate Allison Barahona fifth (1:07.02) in the event.

Brallier swam to a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.43), while Barahona was fourth (2:23.58).

Mason junior Dorothy Reilly touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.20) and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.33).

Senior Sydney Fisher recorded a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.50) and was third in the 100-yard freestyle (52.14).

The combination of sophomore Marla Albanese, Fisher, Tansill and Reilly finished third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.20).  The group of senior Steff Maurer, junior Rachel Williams, Fisher and Albanese finished third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.87).

On the men's side, senior Paul Helfgott won the one-meter dive with a final score of 303.15 and placed second in the three-meter springboard event with a score of 278.05.  Senior Trevor Long notched a third place finish in the three-meter dive with a score of 266.00 and was fifth in the one-meter with a score of 229.50.

Senior Zepher Begnell finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (20.94).  Junior Matthew Lynch was second in the 100-yard butterfly (50.39) and third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.33).

In the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Ryan Donnelly placed third (52.43), while classmate Logan Eubanks was fourth (52.63).  Donnelly also posted a third place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.73).

Mason junior Steven Craig swam to a third place finish in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:36.46) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.50).

The Mason women's and men's swimming and diving teams will compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships Wednesday, Feb. 15 through Saturday, Feb. 18 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
