FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team wraps up a two-game road trip against a familiar in-state rival.
The Patriots play Richmond at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Robins Center in Richmond, Va. The women are the nightcap of a doubleheader, which begins at 1 p.m. when the Mason and Richmond men tip off. Both games will be televised nationally on American Sports Network.
Mason and Richmond have met 56 times, with the Spiders leading the all-time series 34-22. Richmond has won nine straight in the series, including a 57-50 victory in Fairfax on Feb. 20, 2016 in the teams' most recent meeting. The Patriots last won at Richmond on Feb. 13, 1999.
Richmond (9-10, 3-3 Atlantic 10) has lost three of five. The Spiders suffered a 63-58 loss at home to La Salle Wednesday. Senior Janelle Hubbard leads Richmond with 13.3 points a game. Hubbard scored 29 points and made seven 3-pointers against Mason last year.
The Patriots (10-10, 3-4) have lost four of five, including a 58-54 loss at Davidson on Wednesday. Senior
Kara Wright led the Patriots with 14 points and eight rebounds and freshman
Sarah Kaminski had 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds. Mason erased a 10-point deficit in the second half and tied the game on Wright's two free throws with 53 seconds left. But Davidson hit the go-ahead layup on the ensuing possession and made two free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the victory.
Wright leads the Patriots in points (15.2), rebounds (6.5), assists (3.0), steals (1.6), shooting percentage (.448) and 3-point shooting percentage (.344). In conference games, she is averaging 17.6 points – fifth-most in the league – 8.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
