Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team allowed two goals in each half in a 4-1 loss to Georgetown on Thursday night at George Mason Stadium.
Mason (4-3-0) played its fifth straight home game, equaling its second-longest homestand since 1995. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Georgetown on Thursday afternoon, but was moved to Fairfax to be played later in the day due to excessive heat.
The match remained scoreless through the first 35 minutes of play with the defense for each team controlling the play.
Georgetown (5-1-0) took the lead in the 36th minute when forward Crystal Thomas tapped in a rebound to make the score 1-0. The Hoyas increased the advantage in the 45th minute with Thomas finding the back of the net from 18 yards out for her second goal of the half. Georgetown has outscored opponents 10-1 in the first half in its first six games of the season.
“We're not happy with the score but our performance was much better tonight,” said Mason head coach Todd Bramble. “Those two goals that we conceded in the first half were really uncharacteristic and put us in a hole. That's why we schedule these games because it tests every aspect of your game.”
The Hoyas made it 3-0 in the 51st minute when sophomore Caitlin Farrell scored her first goal of the season. Less than six minutes later, senior Grace Damaska tallied her seventh goal of the season to make the score 4-0. The Hoyas have netted at least four goals in four of their five wins this season.
Senior Sarah Hardison scored on a header in the 60th minute to break the shutout. She is tied for the team lead with two goals on the season. Freshman Hugrun Olafsdottir picked up her second assist of the season.
The Hoyas outshot the Patriots 12-5, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Nia Elbeck and Hardison each recorded a shot on goal for Mason.
“It's a matter of a routine that we are in right now,” Bramble said. “We'll get recovered from this game and not let this result affect us when we go over to College Park. We'll be ready for that game.”
The Patriots return to action when they hit the road to face the Terrapins at 7 p.m. on Sunday night in College Park, Maryland.
