FAIRFAX, Va. – After nearly a week off, the George Mason men's soccer team heads back to the pitch for a busy weekend.
The Patriots will host a pair of games at George Mason Stadium as part of the D.C. Capitol Cup. They'll renew a series with Cornell at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Game of the Week. George Mason students with a valid student ID will receive free Wingstock T-shirts and wings (while supplies last).
Mason then welcomes Gonzaga at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both Cornell and Gonzaga and will also play No. 20 American in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the D.C. Capitol Cup.
The Patriots (0-2-1) haven't played since tying Longwood 1-1 last Saturday at George Mason Stadium. Mason took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute on an own goal by Longwood after pressure from Matt Tucker. But the Lancers tied it late, scoring in the 83rd minute to force overtime and, ultimately, a double-overtime draw.
Mason and Cornell will meet on the pitch for just the second time and the first in nearly 20 years. The teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the only other meeting on Sept. 27, 1997.
The Big Red (0-1-1) just began their season last week. The Big Red tied Central Connecticut State 2-2 in double overtime in their season opener last Friday. They then dropped a 2-0 decision at Connecticut on Monday. Cornell went 4-12-1 last year but enters its first season with a new coaching staff led by John Smith, a former associate head coach at Stanford.
Gonzaga and Mason have never met on the soccer field. The Bulldogs are off to a 3-0-1 start, having played every game at home in Spokane, Wash.
After tying Bradley in its season opener, Gonzaga has rattled off three straight wins against University of Illinois-Chicago, Oral Roberts and No. 16 Seattle. The Bulldogs' hot start earned them 20 votes in this week's NSCAA national poll. Gonzaga ranks 20th in the nation in scoring offense with 2.5 goals per game, having scored four goals twice.
