Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team had its four-game home winning streak come to an end, with Oklahoma winning the first-ever meeting 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
The Patriots (4-2-0) had allowed only two goals in their first four home games of the season, including posting shutouts in each of the last two games. Oklahoma (3-2-1) controlled the play for most of the first half and took a 1-0 lead when senior Liz Keester found the top left corner in the 22nd minute.
The Sooners increased the advantage less than three minutes later, when senior Shiloh Price tapped in a crossing pass to make the score 2-0. Mason recorded just one shot on goal in the first half. Oklahoma hadn't scored a goal in the first half over the first five games of the season.
Early in the second half, Oklahoma senior Madison Saliba scored from within the 18-yard box in the 49th minute to give the Sooners a commanding 3-0 lead.
“They have a good team, there's no doubt about that,” Mason head coach Todd Bramble said. “They play a style that can be hard to deal with and we came up short. We were a step late and you get punished for that when you play a team like Oklahoma.”
The final goal of the day was scored off of a missed penalty kick. After the shot hit the post, sophomore Emily Parker found the back of the net low to the left side in the 86th minute. All four goal scorers for the Sooners recorded their first goal of the season.
The Patriots will play their next three games on the road with stops at Georgetown, Maryland and UNC-Wilmington.
“This team has a lot of potential and one result isn't going to define us,” Bramble said. “Just because today didn't go as we wanted it to, I certainly haven't lost any belief in this team. This is why we play a tough non-conference schedule, to prepare us for conference play and this game will make us better.”
The Sooners outshot the Patriots 18-5, including 10-2 in the first half and 8-3 in the second half. The Sooners had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal for the game. Sophomore Emily Littell and junior Erin Mitchell each recorded a shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Kirsten Glad (4-2-0) finished with three saves.
The Patriots will travel to Georgetown to take on the Hoyas on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
