Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the first time this season, the George Mason men's soccer team was held scoreless.
The Patriots suffered a 3-0 loss to West Virginia on Saturday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers scored in the sixth minute and added two goals in the second half as Mason (1-4-1) lost its second straight game.
“We are learning some very valuable lessons on how hard it is to get a result on the road,” George Mason head coach Greg Andrulis said. “A very well-taken free kick put us behind early and the hill got steeper after missing some good opportunities to equalize the match. We finished the first half strong but found ourselves chasing the game against a team that is very good defensively and weren't able to make the play that would have turned the momentum. We need to regroup and bounce back Wednesday at High Point.”
Albert Andres-Llop scored just 5:10 into the game off a free kick to put WVU ahead for good. The Patriots posed several threats in the waning minutes of the first half, though. Graydon Hester fired off two shots in the 41st minute, the first blocked before the second went wide. Tolu Ibikunle, a transfer from West Virginia, also had a shot go wide in the 43rd minute.
But the Mountaineers came out after halftime and added an insurance goal in the 50th minute. West Virginia then finished off the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute.
The Mountaineers (4-1-1) posted their fifth shutout of the season. Mason posted 12 shots but registered just three shots on goal. West Virginia, on the other hand, had 21 shots, with 12 on goal. Patriots goalkeeper Steffen Kraus recorded nine saves.
Mason continues its two-game road trip at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against High Point in High Point, N.C. The Patriots then wrap up non-conference play at home next Saturday against Siena.
