FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team will play an exhibition game against Radford on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Cupp Stadium in Radford, Va. It's the second straight season that the Patriots and Highlanders have faced off in an exhibition game.
Seniors Sarah Hardison and Alex Myers led the team in scoring last season. Hardison led the team with 10 goals and added two assists while Myers finished second on the team with five goals and had seven assists during the 2015 campaign. Juniors Jenna Hamilton, Erin Mitchell and Abby Downey, along with sophomore Nia Elbeck, each found the back of the net twice last season.
Hardison earned VaSID All-State honors and joined Myers on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team, Elbeck was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team and Downey earned a spot on the 11-member Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team.
Head coach Todd Bramble begins his second season at Mason and will guide a Patriots roster that includes seven seniors, eight juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen as they take to the road for the lone exhibition game of the season.
In his first season, Bramble led Mason to nine wins and an eighth place finish in the A-10 during the regular season. The Patriots earned a berth in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament and upset the No. 1 seed George Washington 1-0 in the quarterfinal round.
Mason finished the 2015 season 4-4 at home, 4-5-1 on the road and 1-0-1 in neutral-site games. The Patriots averaged 1.30 goals per game.
The Patriots are competing in the Atlantic 10 for the fourth season and will play a total of 10 games at home. Mason will begin the regular season Friday, Aug. 19 against Old Dominion with a 7 p.m. kickoff at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots will play five of their first six games at home, with the lone road test against No. 4 Virginia on Sunday, Aug. 21 in Charlottesville, Va.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Radford averaged 1.50 goals per game and allowed 1.72 per contest in 2015 and finished the season with an overall record of 6-11-1 and a 1-8-1 mark in the Big South Conference. The Highlanders won five of their first eight games but then notched just one win in their final 10 outings.
Junior Jordan Lundin and sophomore Ana Revollo led the Highlanders with three goals each last season. Lundin was one of only two players to start every game for Radford last year and is a two-time All-Big South first team defender. She was picked third in the 2016 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year voting by the Big South head coaches.
The Highlanders return 13 letterwinners and will have 12 newcomers on the roster.
