FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team continues its homestand at 7 p.m. on Sunday, facing Towson under the lights at George Mason Stadium.

The Patriots have won their first two home games of the season, scoring late goals in both of their 2-1 victories.  Mason won its season opener 2-1 over Old Dominion last Friday when junior Abby Downey scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. 

On Friday, Mason trailed 1-0 to American before senior Sarah Hardison scored the equalizer in the 84th minute and junior Nicolette Herdegen netted the game-winner less than three minutes later.  Sophomore Nia Elbeck set up the winning goal with a crossing pass and leads the team with two assists.

The Patriots were outshot by a combined 44-10 in their first two games of the season, but against American managed a 17-6 advantage, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Kirsten Glad has recorded 21 saves over the first three games and has allowed just one goal (penalty kick) over the last 150:56 of play.

The Patriots went 4-4 at George Mason Stadium last season, winning four straight games at home from Sept. 6 to Oct. 11.

The Patriots and Tigers last faced each other during the 2012 season, with Mason defeating Towson 4-3 in Fairfax, Va. when both teams were members of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Mason and Towson have met 11 times since 2002, with the Patriots leading the all-time series 10-1-0.  The Tigers recorded their lone win over the Patriots, 1-0 on Oct. 26, 2003 at Towson, Md.

Mason has enjoyed the home field advantage against Towson.  The Tigers are looking for their first-ever road win against the Patriots.  Mason is 7-0-0 all-time in games played between the two teams in Fairfax, Va., outscoring the Tigers by a combined score of 18-4, with five of the seven wins by shutout.    

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION

Towson and St. John's played to a scoreless draw on Friday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex in Towson, Md.  Senior goalkeeper Taylor Sebolao made eight saves in the game for the Tigers.  Towson is 0-2-1 to start the season and has been outscored by a combined count of 8-1 in their first three games.

The Tigers suffered a 6-0 loss in their season opener at Georgetown on Aug. 19, with the Hoyas scoring four of their goals in the first half.  Towson then fell to East Carolina 2-1 on Aug. 21, with the Pirates scoring the winning goal in the 78th minute.  Freshman Elizabeth Coletti has scored the only goal for the Tigers over their first three games. 

The Tigers have been outshot 67-12 over three games, including opponents holding a 28-5 advantage in shots on goal.  Towson was outshot 28-2 at Georgetown, 13-7 vs. East Carolina and 26-3 by St. John's.  The Tigers haven't recorded more than three shots on goal in any game.

Senior Natalia Pinkney scored seven goals last season for the Tigers, including three game-winners.  She was named Towson's Offensive Most Valuable Player and this season was selected to the Preseason All-CAA Team.

Towson finished with an overall record of 7-8-4 last season, scoring 20 goals and allowing 27 goals in 19 games.  The Tigers finished with a 2-5-2 mark on the road and were outscored by a combined 16-6 in their nine road games during the 2015 campaign.  Towson earned road wins at Fairfield and at Iona.

Tickets for George Mason soccer matches are $6 for adults, $4 for youth (12 and under).  Tickets can be purchased at the entrance to George Mason Stadium beginning one hour before the start of the game.  Please note, cash is the only method of payment accepted at George Mason Stadium.

DIRECTIONS TO GEORGE MASON STADIUM

To access George Mason Stadium, please use Ox Road (Rt. 123) and turn onto University Drive toward the Field House.  Please note, there is no access to George Mason Stadium via the newly-opened Campus Drive.  Parking will be free around the Field House.
