FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason junior right-hander Tyler Zombro was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic Team, while freshman reliever Zach Mort was selected to the A-10 All-Rookie Team, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Mort led the Patriots in appearances (26) and ERA (2.55) and held opponents to a .205 batting average. He allowed 12 runs, 10 earned, on 26 hits over 35.1 innings of work with 29 strikeouts and only 10 walks. Mort, a native of Chesterfield, Va., finished the season with eight saves, tied for the fifth-most among Atlantic 10 pitchers. He earned a save in each of the Patriots' last five wins. Among all A-10 pitchers, Mort ranked third in appearances (25), third in games in relief (25) and second in games finished (22).
Zombro, an Integrative Studies major from Staunton, Va., led Mason in innings pitched (86.1) and was second on the team with a 3.75 ERA. In his 14 appearances, Zombro walked just 11 batters, second-fewest of any pitcher in the conference. Zombro finished the season with 65 strikeouts and tied for fourth-most among A-10 pitchers with 23 strikeouts looking. He tossed at least seven innings in each of his last six starts of the season, allowing just five earned runs over 47 innings. Zombro was named A-10 Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 25 after tossing a complete-game two-hitter in a 2-0 win at Radford April 23.
The 12-member All-Rookie Team was selected by a vote of the 13 Atlantic 10 head coaches. The 12-member All-Academic Team was chosen by the league's baseball communications directors.
