FAIRFAX, Va. – Jannik Eckenrode's professional career is underway.
The former George Mason captain has signed a professional contract with KF Aegir in Iceland's second division. Eckenrode joined the team recently as the season just started last week.
Eckenrode, a native of Springfield, Va., joins KF Aegir after three years at Mason. The 5-foot-10 midfielder played in 57 games and started 55 for the Patriots. He scored nine goals and had six assists in three years. Eckenrode, who transferred from Radford, capped off his college career in 2015 by scoring two goals and dishing out one assist in 17 starts for the Patriots.
He also played in nine matches in 2015 for AC Connecticut of the Premier Development League, notching a goal and an assist. He has also gained experience playing for the DC United U18 Academy Team and the DC United 23 team.
He received professional interest after an impressive showing at SoccerViza's winter transfer window combine in Orlando. He scored three goals in his final game of the combine to receive a trial offer and a follow-up contract offer from KF Aegir.
“I'm looking forward to working hard and making an immediate impact,” Eckenrode told SoccerViza. “I know that it's the little details that are going to help me stand out this season, to do the things that need to get done to get results for the club and fight for promotion. And if I do those little things, I'm confident that it will get me started on a long and successful career.”
