Fairfax, Va. – George Mason University's men's volleyball team has a huge weekend ahead, in which it will welcome No. 15 Saint Francis and No. 9 Penn State for matches that will determine the Patriots' postseason faith. Mason will celebrate Senior Night against the Nittany Lions, when redshirt senior opposite hitter Paco Velez and middle blocker Dom Edgley will be honored for their contribution to the program.
Mason has not lost a conference match since losing to both teams on the road in February and enters the final weekend of regular season on a five-match win streak. In addition, only UC Irvine has managed to defeat the Patriots in their last 10 contests. Last week, Mason put together two dominant performances to sweep postseason hopful NJIT and a rebuilding Princeton team.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Saint Francis continues its best season of the decade and sits comfortably in second place in the EIVA standings with its own three-match win streak. The Red Flash picked up two signature wins in March, defeating then-No. 6 Penn State on the road and withstood a two-set comeback from then-No. 12 Lewis to prevail in a five-set thriller.
Despite the loss to the Red Flash in four sets and being less convincing than in recent years, Penn State already managed to clinch the top EIVA spot and will host the conference tournament next weekend. In addition, the Nittany Lions will have the advantage of playing the fourth-seeded team in the semi-final, whichever it may be after this weekend. Penn State made no mistake at home last week and lost only a set to Sacred Heart and Harvard to rebound from a non-conference sweep at the hands of No. 2 Ohio State. Before coming to Fairfax, the 24-time defending EIVA champion will visit winless Charleston (W.V.) on Friday.
