Fairfax, Va. – Liz Seymour's home run – first for George Mason University's softball team this season – got Mason going early on and allowed the Patriots to accumulate a lead that Georgetown couldn't really challenge later in the game on Wednesday night.
The sophomore shortstop stepped up third to bat and homered Delaney Osterday's pitch to center field, scoring herself and Mason's lead batter - senior Casey Price – from second base. The Patriots had the bases loaded soon after but could not capitalize on the opportunity to increase their lead in the opening inning.
Two doubles in succession by Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida and Taylor Henry allowed the Hoyas to get on the board with a run by the former, but then Seymour was at the heart of a four-run response by Mason in the bottom of the second. The Saint John, Ind. native first scored senior outfielder Julia Czarnecki for her third RBI of the evening and later crossed home plate for the second time in the game to make the score 4-1. The Patriots, however, were only halfway done in the inning. Head coach Joe Verbanic gave his young guns a chance at bat against the Hoyas and freshman catcher Hayley Hinton made the most of it with an RBI double, scoring fellow rookies Victoria Webster with her fourth hit of the season, 6-1.
After a scoreless third inning, Henry RBI singled to get Grace Appelbe home for the final run in the contest. The Patriots had only two hits in the remaining innings, but Mason's trio at the mound – freshmen Gabriella Lopez and Marina Vitalich and senior Sarah Kleinfelter – and the surrounding defense did not allow Georgetown to capitalize on that and prevented further Hoya runs.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-The Patriots batted .346 (9-26) against Georgetown while the Hoyas averaged .333 with 10 hits from 30 at bats.
-Both teams had an error apiece, which resulted in four unearned runs for Mason and one for Georgetown.

NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
Mason continues its home stand with a three-game series against Rhode Island this weekend, which will open Atlantic 10 play for the Patriots.
