WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington held a double-digit lead the entire second half as George Mason fell at the Revolutionary Rivalry foe 74-52 on Tuesday evening in the Smith Center. Freshman Jaire Grayer led the Patriots with 14 points.
GAME NOTES
-Both teams got off to a slow start as Marko Gujanicic handed Mason a two-point lead early in the ballgame. GW would erase the narrow deficit and grab a six-point advantage with 12:41 to play before Grayer and Thompson put together a 7-0 run to give Mason its last lead, 15-14, with 11:06 left in the first.
-GW used a 12-3 spurt to regain an eight-point advantage and continued to push its lead, holding a 39-23 halftime edge.
-The Colonials grabbed an 18-point led out of the halftime break before Grayer ignited for a 7-0 run to pull the Patriots within 11 at 43-32 with 17:29 left to play.
-Yuta Watanabe snapped the streak as GW used a 42.4 percent shooting effort in the second half to climb away with its largest lead of 29 points.
-Mason closed the game with a 9-2 run for the final score. GW earned a point in the #RevRivalry with the win.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-For the game, GW shot 41.8 percent (28-67) to Mason's 35.1 percent (20-57) efficiency. Grayer was Mason's only player in double-figures, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds. Shevon Thompson also pulled down eight rebounds as Mason took the rebounding battle, 40-36.
-Three Colonials posted double-figures led by seniors Kevin Larsen and Patricio Garino each with 17 points. Tyler Cavanaugh added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. GW converted 12 offensive rebounds into 21 points and used 16 Mason turnovers to also convert into 21 points.
-GW outscored Mason in the paint 36-22. The Colonials finished a perfect 10-for-10 from the line.
