Senior Reana Mohamed will play in her last game at EagleBank Arena tomorrow. The Laurelton, New York, native has played in 91 games and made 33 starts. She leads the team with a 3-point shooting percentage of 45 percent. Reana will graduate this May with a degree in criminology and a minor in forensic science. GoMason.com sat down with Reana for a Q&A.
What sports did you play growing up other than basketball?
I think I only played basketball. I tried lacrosse but I didn't really like it.
What would you say your greatest basketball moment is, any age?
When I made my decision to come to Mason I announced it on television. So I think that was one of the coolest moments I've had.
When did it become obvious you could play basketball in college?
I would say probably the end of my eighth grade year going into high school. I started to receive letters, and, at that time, it wasn't something I was really serious about it. But it was something I enjoyed and it was fun. Then it became something I realized could possibly pay for school for me.
Did you choose your jersey number (No. 5)? If so, why?
I chose my number. My favorite player growing up was Jason Kidd and he wore No. 5. Also, my birthday is on Feb. 5, so that's also why I chose No. 5.
Do you have a funniest moment with Coach Milleson?
Coach M and I have a lot of funny moments. Most of the time I'm laughing at her and her phrases or something she did that just catches me off guard.
Do you have a favorite NBA team or favorite player?
I have a favorite player – LeBron James. But, as far as teams go, I probably root for any New York team. Whether it is the Nets or the Knicks. I know the Knicks have been struggling, but they've been doing better lately.
Do you have a nickname? If so, how did you get it?
Everyone just calls me Re or Re-Re. I don't know how I got it. I guess it is just easier to say than my full name.
Do you have a favorite activity off the court?
I like to dance. Dance and listen to music.
What type of music do you listen to?
Artist wise, I know this is going to sound weird, but I like Celine Dion. I also like Beyonce, Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez and Fabulous.
Growing up, did you have any favorite vacation spots?
Growing up we took a lot of trips to Atlantic City on the weekends as a family. Not just my parents, my brother and I but my cousins as well. So I'll always remember that. We always went to the Boardwalk, ate funnel cakes and rode the one roller coaster they had.
If you could attend any big sporting event, Super Bowl, Final Four, NBA Finals, World Series, Wimbledon, etc., what would it be and why?
I think the World Series. Baseball is not something I really watch a lot, but I think it would be something I'd enjoy because it is different.
Top three items on your bucket list?
I want to go to Bora Bora. I want to get my master's degree. Lastly, I want to go sky diving. If I have to settle for indoor sky diving that would be fine, too. There is still some thrill.
What superhero would you want to be or power would you like to have?
I would probably say Flash. Or something with speed.
Who did you idolize growing up?
My parents. I feel like they didn't have as many opportunities as my brother and I have. They've worked hard to create those for us. So I idolize their hard work.
What is one thing Mason Nation should know about you?
Sometimes I think I'm Beyonce and I call myself Reyonce.
