FAIRFAX, Va. – A month after the MLS SuperDraft, it's official – Taylor Washington is a member  of the Philadelphia Union.

The former George Mason standout has agreed to a deal with the Union, making him the fourth member of the 2016 draft class to join the team. Washington was the 23rd overall selection in last month's draft.

“It was evident from Day One that Taylor entered preseason camp with a focused mentality and committed work ethic in hopes of making our roster,” Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said. “He's earned his place on the team and he exemplifies the type of professionalism we want at our club. He has a bright future and the ability to immediately contribute at such an important position.”

Washington, who was taken with the third pick of the second round, established himself as a premier defender in three years at Mason. He started in 52 games, scored one goal and dished out two assists in his career. He was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference in 2013 as a sophomore.

This past fall, the 22-year-old from Somers, N.Y., was named to the NSCAA All-Midwest Third Team. The left back started 11 games in 2015, playing 984 minutes.

Washington was just the fourth Patriot to be drafted, joining Taylor Morgan (2012, Toronto FC), Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe (2009, Colorado Rapids) and Ritchie Kotschall (1998, Chicago Fire).
