Madeira Beach, Fla. – George Mason University's softball team had an off day at the plate on Sunday and lost its closing game of the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational to tournament host Eastern Michigan 9-1.
After senior first baseman Casey Price and sophomore catcher Brooke Sullivan were left on base in a scoreless first inning, Eastern Michigan took the lead in the bottom of the first when Amanda Akles doubled down the left field line to score Olivia Logan.
Freshman pitcher Gabriella Lopez kept the Eagles scoreless in a quick second inning, but in the third inning Eastern Michigan scored six unanswered runs on back to back to back home runs by Akles, Aoife Duffy and Abi Clark, 7-0.
In the fourth inning, senior second baseman Breanna Boyd doubled home freshman Samantha Zaccari for Mason's only run in the game. Akles then hit a two-run home run to make the score 9-1. Eastern Michigan's pitcher Trisha Trujillo ended the contest prematurely by keeping Mason scoreless in the top of the fifth inning.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Mason hit 3-16 as a team on the day, while the Eagles made the most of 8 hits from 23 at bats.
-Eastern Michigan put up a solid defensive display and did not commit an error in the contest, while Mason committed two errors.
-The patriots left 6 runners on base compared to 4 runners left on base for Eastern Michigan.
-in two innings, Lopez only gave up two earned runs in what was her second ever collegiate appearance.

Mason will not compete next week and will return to the diamond on March 4 to open the season at home with the Patriot Classic.
