Fairfax, Va.- The George Mason University wrestling team was unable to defeat the University of Maryland in College Park Sunday, losing 31-9. Redshirt freshman Tejon Anthony(141) earned a victory by decision, 2-1 in the final match of the dual.
Even though Mason was not in a position to win the dual, Anthony battled and produced a hard fought win. The redshirt freshman from Baltimore showed everyone in his home state the two losses he suffered Saturday, are behind him.
The Patriots got off to an early 6-0 lead when redshirt senior Blake Roulo(149) began the dual with a win by disqualification.
Mason then lost a series of close matches, 3-1, 8-4 and 3-1, allowing Maryland to take the lead, 9-6. Coming off of two tough duals on Saturday, the Patriots were unable to finish off matches against the Terrapins.
Redshirt freshman Matt Voss(HWT) lost in overtime, 7-5, marking the second time in three matches the young Patriot has needed an extra session to decide a contest. Voss has been a steady contributor for Mason all season, but will need to finish strong and find his best form leading up to the EWL Championships, March 5.
Mason has three home duals left in the season, with two coming on Thursday night. Mason will face EWL rival Lock Haven at 5:30 p.m., in a dual that was rescheduled because of the winter storm Jonas, and then Virginia Military Institute at 7:00 p.m.
The Patriots will finish the regular season at the RAC Sunday, Feb. 21 against American University.
