Fairfax, Va.- George Mason University's wrestling team fought valiantly all-day but were defeated by Franklin & Marshall, 21-17 and Bucknell, 32-12. Outstanding performers for the Patriots on the day came from junior Ryan Renkey(133) and redshirt senior captain Greg Flournoy, as both went 2-0 on the day.
The Patriots uncharacteristically fell behind early against the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall, dropping three out of four matches. Renkey earned the only victory for Mason in those first four matches, winning by decision, 8-4. Renkey filled in gallantly for redshirt senior captain Vince Rodriguez(133). Flournoy then dominated his opponent, winning by technical fall, 16-0.
Redshirt junior Patrick Davis(165) followed Flournoy with a win of his own by decision, 7-1. Davis broke open the closely contested match late to secure three points for the Patriots. After Davis' victory, redshirt sophomore Daniel Mika produced his second dual victory of the season with another tightly contested win by decision, 5-3.
Mason's comeback challenge was not enough despite redshirt freshman Matt Voss(HWT) providing some late heroics in the final match of the dual. Voss got a last second takedown to force sudden death overtime, and capped off the dual with another takedown to win by decision, 7-5.
In Mason's second dual of the afternoon, the Patriots were able to get out to their customary fast start against the Bucknell Bison. After a forfeit at the 125 pound weight division, Renkey notched a high scoring victory by decision, 19-18. Renkey was trailing most of the match but persevered and took the lead on a takedown late in the third period.
Flournoy then produced a decision victory, 5-3, which tied the dual at 12 apiece. The Patriot's captain entered the third period with a lead of 4-3, and was able to hold on, as he secured an extra point for riding time in the process.
Those would be the final points Mason scored in the dual as they eventually ran out of steam against the Bison.
Mason's overall record moves to 8-10 overall, and remains at 2-3 in the Eastern Wrestling League. The team will wrestle tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
