DAYTON, Ohio – For a period, the George Mason women's basketball team kept pace, even outshooting and outscoring Dayton.
But, in the long run, the Patriots couldn't cool off the Flyers, who handed Mason an 81-58 loss on Wednesday night and won their fifth straight game in front of 1,647 at UD Arena. Dayton, the fourth highest-scoring team in the Atlantic 10 Conference, made 12 3-pointers and received boosts from its post play to pull away.
“Dayton is a quality, top notch program,” Mason head coach
Nyla Milleson said of the Flyers, who made the Elite Eight in 2015. “We did not do a good job getting to shooters tonight. Their size gets you pulled in and they still have great shooters on the perimeter.”
The Patriots (10-15, 5-7 A-10) shot 47 percent from the field in the first quarter to stake a one-point lead. And, after the Flyers opened the second quarter with a big spurt, Mason stayed within earshot, trailing by just eight at halftime.
But Dayton (13-9, 6-5) kept coming in waves, with Jenna Burdette making six 3-pointers to contribute to a game-high 23 points. Center Saicha Grant-Allen added 17 points and nine rebounds and forward Jodie Cornelie nearly recorded a triple double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks.
Taylor Brown led Mason with 14 points and five assists.
Kristi Mokube added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Kara Wright scored all 10 of her points in the first half, and
Chinyere Bell hauled down 10 rebounds.
Trailing by six points in the first quarter, Mason ended the period on a 7-0 run.
Reana Mohamed sunk a 3-pointer, Brown drained a jumper and Bell grabbed an offensive rebound for a putback layup with 34 seconds left for an 18-17 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Flyers answered, however, with eight straight points to start a 19-5 run that propelled them in front for good. Dayton led by as many as 13 in the second quarter. Mason ended the first half with a flurry and
Jewel Triggs hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left to close the gap to 41-33 at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Mason twice had chances to cut the deficit to seven or six points but couldn't convert either time. Dayton turned back to Grant-Allen and Cornelie and pulled away, pushing the lead to 14 points and the Patriots never sliced the lead back to single digits the rest of the game.
The Patriots stay on the road and head to the northeast to play Rhode Island at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
