WASHINGTON – The George Mason women's basketball team got behind early and Georgetown's 3-point shooting kept the Patriots chasing all night.
Mason pulled within eight in the fourth quarter but the Hoyas' 11 3-pointers were too much to overcome in a 69-56 loss on Thursday night at McDonough Arena. Senior
Kara Wright scored 16 points and senior
Tiffany Padgett and freshman
Sarah Kaminski each added 14 points.
But the Patriots (5-5) got in a hole in the first quarter and trailed by as many as 19 in the final period. Mason, however, didn't quit and rattled off an 11-0 run fueled by five points from Kaminski. Padgett's second 3-pointer cut the deficit to 60-52 with 4:30 left.
Georgetown (7-2), which boasts the No. 4 RPI in the country and has won six straight, answered and ended the spurt on a putback by Faith Woodard. Mason couldn't get the score lower than 10 after that. Dorothy Adamako's 3-pointer with 2:33 pushed the lead to an insurmountable 67-54. Adamako finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with eight rebounds.
The Patriots scored the game's first five points but Georgetown responded with 14 straight. Mason trailed the rest of the way and committed 11 of its 16 turnovers in the first half. The Hoyas took advantage, scoring 21 points off turnovers (Mason scored 22 points off 17 Georgetown turnovers). Georgetown also won the battle on the boards (43-36) and scored 20 second-chance points. The Patriots trailed 35-20 at halftime after shooting just 26 percent in the first half. They finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field.
"We knew the keys to this ballgame where to take care of the basketball and not give up easy transition points - and that's exactly what dug us in a hole," head coach
Nyla Milleson said. "Then we got back on our heels and panicked and didn't run very good offense, which led to turnovers and led to more (Georgetown) points. I thought more than anything we settled in offensively and got good shots and took better care of the basketball. We had only five turnovers in the second half and I thought we guarded pretty well in the halfcourt. But we gave up 21 points off turnovers and 20 off of second-chance. That is not going to win many ballgames against a caliber team like this."
Mason wraps up its five-game road trip against Illinois State at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Bloomington, Ill.
