FAIRFAX, Va. – On the heels of consecutive wins, the George Mason women's basketball team makes a short trip in hopes of extending its winning streak.
The Patriots play at crosstown rival Georgetown at 7 p.m. on Thursday at McDonough Arena in Washington D.C. Mason (5-4), coming off back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly a year, will play its fourth of five straight road games.
This marks the Patriots' first trip to Georgetown and McDonough Arena in 12 years. Mason defeated the Hoyas 70-62 on Dec. 8, 2004 at McDonough Arena. Georgetown, though, holds a 17-8 edge in the all-time series. The Hoyas won the most recent meeting, a 63-57 decision in Fairfax last year on Dec. 2, 2015.
Georgetown (6-2) will be playing just its second home game of the season. After defeating George Washington at home in the season opener on Nov. 11, the Hoyas played the next seven games out of the nation's capital, including two games in Daytona Beach, Fla., as part of the San Juan Shootout over Thanksgiving.
The Hoyas are riding a five-game winning streak and are coming off a 54-46 victory over Delaware on Sunday. Their only two losses this season have been on the road to Virginia Tech (currently ranked No. 25 in the country) and at Minnesota. Sophomore Dionna White (15.8 ppg), senior Faith Woodard (15.6 ppg) and junior Dorothy Adomako (13.6 ppg) lead Georgetown in scoring. Woodard is nearly averaging a double-double with 15.6 points and 9.1 rebounds a game.
Mason won consecutive games last week for the first time since defeating Delaware and Air Force on Dec. 7 and Dec. 19 last season. Both wins came on the road as the Patriots edged Detroit Mercy 55-54 on Wednesday thanks to a game-winning layup by senior
Kara Wright with 3.5 seconds left. Wright then scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high tying 10 rebounds for her second career double-double in leading the Patriots to a 66-55 victory at Massachusetts on Sunday in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener.
On Monday, Wright was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the first time in her career. The 5-foot-11 guard/forward averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in the two wins. Wright, a native of Louisville, Ky., leads the team in points (15.0 ppg), rebounds (5.8 rpg), assists (2.5 apg), steals (2.0 spg), shooting percentage (.536) and 3-point shooting percentage (.444).
Freshman guard/forward
Jacy Bolton was tabbed to the Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll after she scored 14 points against UMass. The Drexel, Mo., native is averaging 9.8 points and shooting 47.6 percent from the field – both second on the team behind Wright.
