CAMBRIDGE, Mass
. – Even pouring rain and 50-degree temperatures could not stop George Mason University's women's rowing team from recording its best finish of the fall season by completing the highly contested Head of the Charles women's club eights race in 18:42.314.
Despite being pushed to the outside on some corners, the Patriots' battled back and shattered improved on last weekend's Occoquan Chase finish by 31 seconds. The time was good for the 23
rd best finish in the race and allowed Mason to leave 16 boats behind, including those of 2016 Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship runner up Massachusetts (33
rd – 19:44.035) and former Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary (29
th – 19:05.666).
"The girls had limited water time in this lineup but were able to overcome some of the conditions to put together an improved row from last week," head coach
Ted Nagorsen said.
"The [Head of the] Charles attracts the fastest crews from around the country and we put forth our best effort. These were some of the toughest conditions I've seen here in a few years and I am proud of how the girls handled themselves considering all factors."
There was little surprise at the top as many of the teams favored for a top finish lived up to the expectations. Brown won the race with a time of 16:50.417, less than four seconds ahead of Syracuse. The Orange pulled away the second place by even more narrow of a margin to leave Radcliffe third with a time of 16:55.830. Northeastern (16:59.350) was convincing for the fourth-best finish while A-10's third representative, Fordham, was denied a top-five finish by Penn by half a second and finished sixth.
