FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University’s women’s rowing team will get a taste of the largest two-day regatta in the world as it is scheduled to race in the 52nd Head of the Charles this weekend.
Mason will race one boat in the regatta in Saturday’s club women’s eights event. After lacking competition in last weekend’s Occoquan Chase, the Patriots will compete against 38 other boats on Saturday. Two of those teams will be Mason’s Atlantic 10 Conference opponents Massachusetts and Fordham. The Patriots’ former Colonial Athletic Association rivals Old Dominion and William & Mary will be the other two Virginian boats in list of competitors of the race, which is highlighted by traditionally strong Penn, Syracuse, and Radcliffe teams.
Mason will race a boat composed primarily from rowers who competed in last weekend’s Varsity 8A boat that completed the Occoquan Chase with a time of 19:13.88. Head coach Ted Nagorsen and his assistants have made three changes to the lineup: freshman Nida Peleda will compete at the intercollegiate level for the first time as she takes the No. 5 position. Junior Caitlin Mahoney, who rowed in it last weekend, is moved to No. 3 since her classmate Anne Graf will now be at the bow positon.
