FAIRFAX, Va. – A monster night from redshirt sophomore Casey Davis would not go for naught for the George Mason women's basketball team.

Even if that meant playing five more minutes.

Davis recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds – both career highs – to lift the Patriots to a 68-64 victory in overtime over Navy on Tuesday night in a back-and-forth battle at the Recreation and Athletic Complex (RAC).

"Just unbelievable the fight and effort she showed," head coach Nyla Milleson said. "She is not the fastest, she is not the quickest but she is very intelligent. She plays very good position defense. She really battled on the boards. That is bonus points - 16 out of her. Obviously we want the six, eight, 10 maybe we can get out of her. But getting 16 out of her is really, really a bonus. So great team effort tonight."

In order to pick up its fourth win in five games, Mason (7-5) needed extra time to fend off the Midshipmen (7-4), who erased a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit.

With 1.3 seconds left in regulation, Navy's Sarita Condie sunk a 3-pointer deep in the far right corner falling away to force overtime. Despite the stunning shot, the Patriots regrouped.

On the team's first possession of overtime, Davis grabbed an offensive rebound and immediately went back up for a layup to give Mason the lead for good. Davis added another layup in the period as Navy scored just four points in extra time.

The game stayed tight in overtime, though, with the Patriots never leading by more than four. Navy pulled within two points with 49 seconds left and had a chance to tie or take the lead late. But Taylor Dunham's jumper with nine seconds left bounced off the rim. Mason senior Kara Wright grabbed the rebound, drew a foul and drained two free throws with six seconds left to seal the victory.

"I'm just really, really proud of our effort," Milleson said. "It has been a long week of finals. We had five very good days of practice but trying to shuffle in and out with finals. We knew Navy was going to be a battle. They are very disciplined. They play very, very hard. They shoot the ball extremely well. They're averaging nine 3s a game. I can hear my dad all the way from Missouri (yelling), 'Foul, foul.' That was a tough one, that big one they hit at the end where you could have maybe fouled. But we only gave up seven 3s to them and only two in the second half. But Kara Wright did a great job stepping up to line late. It wasn't easy but we got it done."

Wright finished with 16 points – 14 coming after halftime – made 7-of-10 from the free-throw line and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Tiffany Padgett added 11 points and six rebounds.

Davis shot 6-of-9 from the field, made all four free throw attempts and seven of her rebounds came on the offensive glass. Her 16 rebounds are the most by a Patriot in one game since Janaa Pickard grabbed 21 rebounds against Utah Valley on Nov. 14, 2013.

The 6-foot-2 forward from Gambrills, Md., also set a personal best in minutes with 31. Davis, who only played eight games last season due to injury, had previous career highs in points and rebounds of 11 and nine, respectively. She entered the game averaging just 3.2 points and 3.3 rebounds this season. But she has started the last four games and watched her minutes increase.

"In practice, just proving myself and making sure I was noticed," Davis said. "Then, when I got the opportunity in a game, to make the best of it."

The game featured 17 lead changes – 16 in the first half alone – and 11 ties. After the Midshipmen extended its second-half lead to six points early in the third quarter, the Patriots responded with a 17-2 run to end the quarter. They scored the last 11 points of the period and Jacy Bolton's layup on a fastbreak started by a Davis defensive rebound pushed the advantage to 51-42 heading into the final quarter.

Mason won the rebounding battle 52-43, outscored the Midshipmen in the paint 42-24 and scored 20 second-chance points. Navy made seven 3-pointers and had four players score in double figures, led by Condie's game-high 20.

The Patriots break for Christmas before resuming play after the holiday in Miami for the FIU Holiday Tournament. Mason will play former CAA foe Drexel on Dec. 27 before concluding the tournament against host FIU on Dec. 28.
