Patriots Edged by Towson and Northeastern

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up a two-day tri-meet, falling to both Towson and Northeastern on Saturday at the Jim McKay Natatorium.

After leading Towson 68-41 through 12 events after day one, the Mason men's team won three individual events and one relay on day two, but the Tigers would go on to a 177-174 win over the Patriots. 

The Mason women's team won three individual events on day two but fell to Towson 204-149 and lost to Northeastern 197-155.

The Patriot's women's team recorded 31 season-best times, while the men's team posted 21 season-best times over the two-day event.

On the men's side, junior Steven Craig won his second individual event of the weekend, finishing first in the 400-yard IM (4:05.79), while freshman Garrett Anderson placed third (4:07.14).  Craig also notched a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.84).

Junior Alec Morin recorded a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (46.38), with senior Zepher Begnell second (46.67) and sophomore Hagen Dietrich finishing fourth (48.25) in the event.  Morin won two events during the meet and was part of two first-place relay teams.

Freshman Attila Kiss, who won the 1,650-yard freestyle on day one, registered a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.68) and was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.93) during the second day of competition. 

Freshman Logan Eubanks earned a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (51.03), finishing just ahead of classmate Ryan Donnelly (52.23).  Eubanks ranks second on Mason's top freshman list in the 100-yard backstroke.  Donnelly touched the wall second for the Patriots in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.80).

Junior Matthew Lynch was second in the 100-yard butterfly (51.28) and third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.24) on day two.  Freshman Christopher Stankiewicz placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.21), just ahead of senior Ryan Frayne (59.42), who finished in third place.

The combination of Morin, Begnell, Dietrich and Stankiewicz won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:06.16).  In the 200-yard medley relay, Stankiewicz, Eubanks, Lynch and Begnell were second with a time of 1:33.55.

In the deep end of the pool, senior Paul Helfgott completed the sweep of the diving events by winning the three-meter springboard with a score of 231.80.  Freshman William Dubuque was second with a score of 167.80.

On the women's side, senior Sydney Fisher won the 100-yard freestyle (51.27) on day two.  She won two individual events and was part of a winning relay team over two days.  Junior Dorothy Reilly took first place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.26) and placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (57.56).

Senior Sarah Brallier took first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.05), with junior Allison Barahona finishing second (2:22.23).  Brallier was also second in the 400-yard IM (4:30.03), while Barahona recorded a third place finish in the event (4:40.16).

Junior Amy Tansill swam to a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.72).  Senior Steff Maurer was third in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.76) and 200-yard backstroke (2:06.76).

The combination of Fisher, Tansill, Reilly and Maurer recorded a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.12).

Mason is back in action Nov. 17-19, hosting the Patriot Invitational at the Jim McKay Natatorium.
