FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team takes flight for the first time this season for a new challenge.

The Patriots head to Detroit Mercy for an 11 a.m. tip-off on Wednesday at Calihan Hall in Detroit. The game, which is field trip day for area schools, will be broadcast online at ESPN3.com. This will be the first meeting between the programs.

Looking to snap a two-game losing skid, the Patriots (3-4) continue a five-game road trip that started on Sunday at Towson. Mason suffered a 79-75 loss to the Tigers, nearly erasing an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit. Freshman guard Sarah Kaminski scored 10 of her career-high 17 points in the final period, including eight straight to fuel a 13-5 run that pulled the Patriots within one.

But Mason failed to capitalize on two chances to tie and Towson made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the victory. The Patriots shot an impressive 49 percent from the field but were outrebounded for just the second time this season and committed 20-plus turnovers for the second straight game.

Detroit Mercy (3-3) is coming off a splitting a pair of games at the Cal State Northridge Thanksgiving Classic. The Titans dropped a 76-67 decision to host Cal State Northridge on Friday before bouncing back with a win the next day against Delaware. Junior Brianne Cohen made a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left to stave off Delaware, which rallied to tie the game after trailing by 26 points in the third quarter.

Senior guard Rosanna Reynolds leads Detroit with 16.7 points and 5.2 assists a game – second-most in the Horizon League. She was tabbed the Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year after earning All-Horizon League First Team honors last year. Head coach Bernard Scott is in his second season at the helm after leading the Titans to a 15-15 record a year ago and a fourth-place finish in the Horizon League with a 11-7 mark. Detroit was picked to finish second in the conference this season.

Mason guard Sylvia Maxwell returns to her home state. The redshirt senior hails from Lansing, Mich., about 90 miles northwest of Detroit. Maxwell was a two-time all-state guard at Waverly High School before starting her collegiate career at Niagara. She sat out last year after transferring to Mason and is averaging 3.4 points and 2.0 rebounds in her first season with the Patriots.
