TOWSON, Md. – A ferocious fourth quarter from freshman guard
Sarah Kaminski wasn't enough for the George Mason women's basketball team to pull out a win on the road.
Kaminski scored 10 of her career-high 17 points in the final period but the Patriots' comeback attempt fell short in a 79-75 loss to Towson on Sunday at the SECU Arena. Towson's Sianni Martin sunk a free throw with 12 seconds left to stave off Mason (3-4), which trailed by eight points in the fourth quarter.
Down 70-64 with 4:48 left, Kaminski sank two consecutive 3-pointers – the second answering a 3-pointer by Towson's Raven Bankston – to keep Mason within three points. After a free throw by the Tigers,
Tayler Dodson sunk a turnaround jumper and drew a foul, making the free throw to complete the 3-point play to cut the lead to 74-73 with 2:35 to go.
Towson (5-0) responded with a layup and Kaminski's game-tying 3-point attempt missed. Still, the Patriots had two more chances to tie. A turnover ended one possession, though, and
Tiffany Padgett's jumper in the lane missed with 30 seconds left.
Kaminski made two free throws to pull within 78-75 with 19 seconds left. On the ensuing Towson inbounds pass, Dodson stripped the ball from Bankston. But Dodson had to throw the ball loose to avoid stepping out of bounds. The Tigers corralled the loose ball and Martin drew a foul, making the second of two free throws to seal the victory.
Kaminski, whose previous career high was seven points, finished 5-for-11 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free-throw line.
Kara Wright added 12 points and Dodson and
Chinyere Bell each scored 10 points off the bench. Martin led all scorers with 20 points for Towson, which also had four players score in double figures and three score 18 or more (Martin, Bankston 19 and Jordyn Smith 18).
The Patriots led by eight in the second quarter and took a three-point lead into halftime. But Towson roared in front after the break, scoring 25 points in the third quarter to take a 62-58 lead into the final period. The Tigers extended their advantage to eight early in the fourth quarter before a 13-5 run, fueled by eight points from Kaminski, pulled the Patriots within one on Dodson's three-point play.
Mason shot 49 percent from the field and, in three quarters, shot higher than 54 percent. But 20 turnovers led to 20 points for Towson. It was the second straight game the Patriots had committed at least 20 turnovers. They were also outrebounded 38-32 and Towson grabbed 19 offensive rebounds.
The Patriots have a quick turnaround as they get back on the court at 11 a.m. on Wednesday with a road trip to Detroit.
