BROOKLYN, N.Y. – For the third time in five days, the George Mason women's basketball team hits the hardwood.
Wrapping up a two-game road trip and a busy stretch out of the gate, the Patriots play LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
Mason opened the season on Friday with a win against Radford at home in Fairfax, then turned around less than 48 hours and lost to Delaware on the road on Sunday. Now, the Patriots (1-1) will try to pick up their first road win of the season at LIU Brooklyn – a team they've never faced before.
LIU Brooklyn (0-1) is coming off a 68-47 loss to Army at home on Saturday. The Blackbirds went 9-21 last year and 7-11 in the Northeast Conference in Stephanie Oliver's first season as head coach. Oliver previously spent two years as Seton Hall's top assistant coach.
This year, the Blackbirds were picked to finish fifth in the NEC preseason coaches poll and senior Shanovia Dove was tabbed to the Preseason All-NEC Team. The 5-foot-8 guard averaged 14.5 points in 2015-16 to earn third team All-NEC honors.
Through two games, the Patriots have been led by redshirt senior
Kara Wright. The 5-foot-11 guard from Louisville is averaging 19.5 points, six rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 assists. She scored a career-high 25 points against Radford in the opener, setting personal-bests in both made field goals (nine) and 3-pointers (three).
Redshirt senior
Tiffany Padgett has also had a strong start. The 6-foot-1 forward from Laurel, Md., is averaging 12 points and six rebounds. She tied a career-high with 14 points against Delaware in a 67-51 loss on Sunday. She has also showed her range, knocking down a career-high tying best two 3-pointers in each of the first two games. She shares the team lead with Wright with four 3-pointers so far this season.
Sophomore
Chinyere Bell is also averaging double figures, with 10.5 points through the first two games. The 6-foot-1 forward scored a career-high 18 points against Radford on Friday. She also leads the team with 6.5 rebounds a game.
The Patriots return to Fairfax late Tuesday night and will host a three-game homestand at EagleBank Arena. They welcome Arizona at 7 p.m. on Friday, followed by Norfolk State on Monday and Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.
