The George Mason Patriots had a case of Jekyll and Hyde, playing two very different looking halves of basketball, but a 57-point second half outburst led to a 90-65 lopsided victory against Lebanon Valley College tonight at EagleBank Arena.
Lebanon Valley seem to do everything right in the first half, finishing with 43 points with six three-pointers and hitting their first 15 free throws to take a 10-point lead into the half. The score was tied at 18 apiece at the 11:03 mark. Down 10 points with 2:29 on the clock, neither team would score until
Marquise Moore made a layup with four seconds left. The Dutchmen's Marquis Davis would respond with a layup on the other end to keep the margin at 10 points, 43-33.
"We had to turn up the level of urgency on the defensive end and calm down and relax on the offensive end," added Paulsen.
Mason opened the half on a 6-0 run and a much better defensive effort. Sophomore Kam Murrell gave the Patriots their first lead since the score was 4-3 early in the first half, 55-53, with a three-point play on a layup at 12:26 left in the game. Mason would go on a 35-12 run to end the game.
"We told our guys in the locker room a 35-point turnaround in a half in nothing short of remarkable," said Coach Paulsen in the postgame presser. "It just points out to our guys that when they are locked in and they're focused and they're approaching the game from the right end of the floor, from the defensive end, they are capable of great things. And the opponent really doesn't matter. We talked before the game about playing against the game not the opponent."
Mason had five players score in the double figures led by a season-high 19 points by senior
Marquise Moore.
Otis Livingston II added 16 points.
Kameron Murrell scored a career-high 15 points, tying a career-high three 3-pointers and five rebounds.
Jaire Grayer added 14 points and a career-high 5 blocks.
"I thought Marquise played very very well, but for me, the guys that sparked us were
Jaire Grayer who had nine rebounds, four offensive, and five blocks and just did the little things," added Paulsen. "I thought kam (Murrell) was phenomenal. Sam Light was a heck of a player and Kam was our most effective guy guarding him. That's what we focus on not much who scores the ball, but who does the little things."
