FAIRFAX, Va. – Less than 48 hours after opening its season, the George Mason women's basketball team hits the road in hopes of starting a winning streak.
The Patriots play Delaware at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. Mason (1-0) heads into the matchup fresh off a convincing 70-56 victory over Radford on Friday night at EagleBank Arena.
After winning their home opener for the fifth straight year, the Patriots will try to snap a four-game losing streak in road openers. They last won their first road game of the season on Nov. 17, 2011 at Longwood.
Mason came out strong in its season opener, never trailing against Radford and leading by as many as 20 points in the second half. Senior
Kara Wright set a career-high with 25 points, including a personal-best three 3-pointers (one beating the buzzer before halftime). Sophomore
Chinyere Bell set career highs with 18 points and five assists.
While Mason kicked off 2016-17 on Friday, Delaware opens its season on Sunday. The Blue Hens return four starters and seven letterwinners from a team that went 16-15 overall, 10-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play and reached the semifinals of the CAA tournament last season.
Senior guard Erika Brown (11.4 ppg) is back as the team's top returning scorer and was named to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team. Sophomore Nicole Enabosi also returns after averaging 8.9 points and 7.1 rebounds a year ago. Head coach Tina Martin is in her 21st season at Delaware and is the all-time winningest coach at UD – men's or women's basketball – with a 392-224 record.
Delaware holds a 21-13 edge in the all-time series with Mason, which was a CAA rival of the Blue Hens before joining the A-10 in 2013.
Last season, the Patriots knocked off the Blue Hens 90-83 in double overtime on Dec. 7, 2015. Delaware's Hannah Jardine led all scorers with 31 points and then-senior
Taylor Brown led Mason with 28 points. Jardine tied the game as time expired with a 3-pointer to force overtime. A jumper by Mason's
Tiffany Padgett at the end of the first overtime forced five more minutes. Then, Wright scored six points in double overtime to finish with 18 as the Patriots pulled away.
