FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University's women's volleyball team will wrap up the 2016 season with another chapter of the Revolutionary Rivalry against George Washington.
After orchestrating a five-set thriller in Fairfax last month in which George Washington came back from 2-0, this time it will be Mason who travels the short distance to the nation's capital to entertain the Colonials on their Senior Day. The two teams are currently with identical conference records, which means that Saturday's winner will overlap its opponent in the A-10 standings and earn the bragging rights until next season.
The Patriots split their last weekend, winning yet another five-setter –at Fordham on Friday – for the program's first-ever three-match win streak. That streak came to an end the following night at the hands of one of the best teams in the conference, Rhode Island. The Rams punched their second-seed ticket to the conference championship with a convincing victory against Mason in Kingston, R.I.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NET
George Washington's season-best run was three wins as well, achieved in a matter of a week between Oct. 22 and Oct. 28. However, Duquesne put an end to the win streak two weeks ago and since then the Colonials have lost to Rhode Island and Fordham as well to enter the final weekend of their season on their second longest losing streak this season. George Washington has the third most efficient attack in the Atlantic 10 (.214) and the fourth-best net defense with 2.38 blocks per set. Senior Chidima Osuchukwu leads the Colonials both in attack with 286 kills and at the net with 1.39 blocks per set, the second making her the second-best blocker in the conference. Unlike most teams, George Washington does not have a player that picks up the majority of the credit for ground defense; instead, GW has four players with triple-digit digs this season, including a tie between Emily Clemens and Kelsey Clark at the top with 174 apiece. Libero Maddie Brown is third with 168 digs, but racks up a team-high 3.23 digs per set.
