Box Score KINGSTON, R.I. – A first-half hole was too large to dig out for the George Mason men's soccer team in its final road game of the season.
The Patriots fell behind by three goals at halftime and never recovered in a 3-1 loss at Rhode Island on Saturday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
Mason (2-11-2, 0-6-1 Atlantic 10) got behind early in the first half. After the Patriots committed a foul in the penalty box, Rhode Island's Stavros Zarokostas converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute for a 1-0 lead.
The Rams (6-10-1, 3-4-0) scored the eventual game-winner in the 31st minute by Dominik Richter on an assist by Carlo Davids. Richter pushed their lead to three goals when he scored again in the 36th minute on a penalty kick.
The Patriots gained some momentum just more than a minute into the second half. Junior
Conlan Kemmerer corralled a loose ball in the box and put it past Rhode Island goalkeeper Nils Leifhelm in the 47th minute. It was Kemmerer's first goal of the season.
But Mason wouldn't find the back of the net again. The Patriots fired four more shots in the second half, with three on goal, but Leifhelm was there. He made three of his four saves in the second half. Mason had just eight shots, with five on goal.
Rhode Island had 11 shots and six on goal. Mason redshirt senior
Michael Butts replaced senior
Steffen Kraus after halftime and made his first appearance of the season. Butts stopped both shots on goal he saw.
The Patriots return home to end their season next Saturday against Davidson for Senior Night at George Mason Stadium.
