PITTSBURGH – A win was taken away from the George Mason men's soccer team but not a positive result.

After allowing a game-tying goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Patriots fended off Duquesne through double overtime for a 2-2 tie on Wednesday night at Rooney Field. The draw marked the first point in conference play collected by Mason, which snapped a five-game losing streak.

"A hard fought game at a very tough venue to get a result," George Mason head coach Greg Andrulissaid. "Proud of the guys' effort and determination tonight. We had the lead twice and were unlucky in some regards to not get the win. Both goalkeepers came up big and the save of the match goes to the Duquesne keeper who made a point-blank save in overtime. We are looking forward to getting home on Saturday and building on our last two efforts."

Thanks to goals by Tolu Ibikunle and Tunde Akinlosotu, Mason held a one-goal lead late in the second half. But Duquesne's Ian Larson soared a shot from 18 yards on the left side into the top right corner to tie the game in the 81st minute and ultimately force overtime.

In the first overtime, the Dukes (7-3-4, 2-1-2 A-10) controlled possession and fired off four shots, all of them off frame. But it was the Patriots (2-9-2, 0-4-1) who had the best opportunity to win the game.

Junior Henning Dirks received a pass in the box and had a point-blank shot from just yards out but Duquesne goalkeeper Evan Kozlowski made an incredible stop, extending his left arm and punching the ball out of play. Each team posted a shot in double overtime but both were off the mark to end the game in a draw.

Mason jumped in front first on a goal by Ibikunle in the 18th minute. From 45 yards out, freshman Grant Robinson sent a free kick into the far right side of the box. Senior Cullen Hunter got his head on the ball and sent it toward the net, where Ibikunle tapped in a shot just inside the near post.

The Patriots took the 1-0 lead into halftime but Duquesne quickly tied it up after the break. Just 38 seconds in, the Dukes scored off a throw-in. After Ryan Landry headed the throw-in to Larson, who sent a header into the center of the net.

Mason responded just minutes later on a great run by freshman Ryan Mingachos. After forcing a turnover, the midfielder dribbled nearly 60 yards. He got all the way into the box before sending a short cross to Akinlosotu for the goal.

Mason finished with six shots on goal – two apiece from Ibikunle, Akinlosotu and Dirks. Dukes goalkeeper Kozlowski recorded four saves. Duquesne had 19 total shots, including nine on goal. But senior goalkeeper Steffen Kraus was more than up for the challenge, making seven saves.

The Patriots return home to play La Salle at 7 p.m. on Saturday at George Mason Stadium for the VA811 Game of the Week.
