FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team looks to kick off the latest chapter of the Revolutionary Rivalry with a win.
The Patriots host rival George Washington at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at George Mason Stadium. It will be the first athletics matchup between Mason and GW of the 2016-17 school year.
Since Mason joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2013, the schools have competed in the Revolutionary Rivalry series. Points are given for each team win (in all sports both schools have) and tallied at the end of the year. The Colonials have won the event twice, with Mason and GW sharing the title in 2014-15.
Mason (2-7-1, 0-2-0 A-10) is trying to snap a three-game losing streak. The Patriots are coming off a 2-1 loss to Saint Joseph's on Saturday night at home.
After the Hawks went ahead in the 23rd minute, Mason tied it up eight minutes later. Senior Cullen Hunter scored his first goal of the season and just the third of his career on a header off a corner kick by Henning Dirks, who leads the team with four assists. But St. Joe's scored the game-winner in the 59th minute on a setpiece for Mason's third straight loss.
George Washington (5-3-5, 0-1-2) is also looking for its first conference win. The Colonials, who won the A-10 regular season title last year, are coming off a 1-0 loss at Duquesne. Before the setback to the Dukes, GW was in a five-game unbeaten streak, which included three wins. The Colonials posted three shutouts during that stretch. Goalkeeper Thor Arne Hofs has six shutouts on the season and leads the A-10 with a .855 save percentage.
This will mark the 41st meeting between the teams, with the Patriots leading the all-time series 25-12-3. George Washington defeated Mason 1-0 last year for its first win in the series since 2005. Prior to last year's loss, the Patriots had won four straight against the Colonials.
