BOX SCORE (HTML)

Washington, D.C. – For the second straight game, the George Mason women's basketball team produced a fast start and balanced scoring.

On Friday, however, the Patriots weren't able to keep Revolutionary Rival George Washington from doing the same. The Colonials dominated the boards and pulled away in the second half, handing Mason an 82-68 loss at the Charles E. Smith Center. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved up as Snowstorm Jonas began to blanket the area.

The Patriots (8-12, 3-4 Atlantic 10) had four players score in double figures, led by 16 from Taylor Brown. But the Colonials (17-3, 7-0) also had four in double figures, including two double-doubles, as they picked up their 12th straight victory.

“We knew the two keys going into the game we're going to be keeping them off of the offensive glass and defensive transition,” Mason head coach Nyla Milleson said. “Unfortunately, we weren't able to do either one today. We played hard and had decent offensive execution with four in double figures.”

GW was without the nation's leading rebounder Jonquel Jones (16.8 ppg, 14.9 rpg) due to an injury. But the Colonials still dominated the glass. They outrebounded the Patriots 47-35, boosted by double-doubles from Caira Washington (20 points, 12 rebounds) and Kelli Prange (17 points, 12 rebounds).

Neither teams showed signs of weary legs right away as both had played less than 48 hours before. The teams combined for 50 points in the opening quarter, with GW holding a slim 27-23 lead after one quarter.

Mason, which shot 56.7 percent in the first half, never led but hung tight early. After trailing by 10, the Patriots went on a 9-0 run, with four points from Chinyere Bell during the burst. Tiffany Padgett sunk a jumper with 3:48 left in the first half to cut the lead to 38-37.

But Prange and Washington responded quickly with back-to-back baskets in transition to take a seven-point lead into halftime. An 8-0 run in the third quarter pushed a five-point lead to 13 in less than two minutes. Lauren Chase sunk a 3-pointer in the corner at the end of the third quarter for a 67-54 lead.

Kara Wright and Kristi Mokube each scored 12 points for the Patriots and Padgett added 11.

Mason now returns home to host Saint Louis at 7 p.m. on Thursday at EagleBank Arena.
