STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Competing in a field of more than 1,500 athletes, the George Mason women's and men's track and field teams made their presence known during their first road meet of the year.
The women placed sixth and the men finished eighth at the Great Dane Invitational on Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Complex. The field featured 60 schools and clubs, including 20-plus Division I teams on both sides. It was just the second indoor track meet of the year for the Patriots, who kicked off their season last weekend at home at the Field House.
“By and large, we had a very good day,” Head Coach Andrew Gerard said. “In general, we competed very well across the board. The times, distances and heights weren't always exactly what we wanted today, but if we continue to compete like we did today, we'll be in a good position when the championship portion of the season arrives."
A 1-2 finish in the women's pole vault was one of the biggest highlights of the day. Teammates Lindsay Horton and Shelby Garnand both jumped 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3 ½ inches). But Horton, a senior, needed just the minimum amount of jumps to clear the bar at 3.75, so she took first while Garnand, a sophomore, was right behind in second. Fellow sophomore Ashley Hinton finished tied for seventh as the Patriots collected a 19 of their 43 points in the pole vault.
Sophomore Sharon Dorsey also had a standout day. She finished first among collegiate athletes in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:14.22. She then led off the 4x400-meter relay team, which included Sarah Moore, Sommer Sharpe and Caela Williams, that took third in a time of 3:50.16.
Junei Mosley finished fourth among collegiate athletes in the triple jump with a leap of 11.75 meters (38 feet, 6 ¾ inches).
On the men's side, reigning Atlantic 10 Conference champ John Seals led the Patriots, placing in both the high jump and the long jump. He leapt 1.99 meters (6-feet-6 ¼ inches) to finish third in the high jump, an event he won in both the conference indoor and outdoor track meets last year. He then jumped an indoor personal-best 6.92 meters (22 feet and 8 ½ inches) in the long jump to place fourth among collegiate athletes.
Sophomore Raeshawn Bishop also put an impressive display with his third-place finish in the triple jump as he leapt an indoor personal-best 14.85 meters (48 feet and 8 ¾ inches).
Bernard Freeman finished sixth among collegiate athletes in the 200-meter dash with an indoor personal-best time of 21.81. In the 800-meter run, Austin Savage also placed sixth among collegiate athletes with an indoor personal-best time of 1:53.22.
The Patriots now have two weeks off before they return home to host the Patriot Games on Jan. 29-30 at the Field House.
