CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After cutting the deficit to one goal in the 66th minute, the George Mason men's soccer team (1-3) was unable to complete the comeback as it fell to No. 5 Virginia (2-0-1) 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Klöckner Stadium.
MATCH NOTES
-Mason had the first scoring chance of the match on a penalty kick attempt from Daniel Hoffmann in the eighth minute. The attempt missed to keep the score even at 0-0.
-Virginia peppered six shots in the first 33 minutes of play before convering in the 37th minute for the first goal of the matcha shot by Riggs Lennon from 16 yards out.
-Just over seven minutes later the fifth-ranked Cavaliers grew their lead to 2-0 on a shot from eight yards out from Nicko Corriveau, his second goal of the season.
-Henning Dirks scored his first goal of the season in the 66th minute to cut the deficit in half, chipping the ball in from 10 yards out into the middle of the net.
-The Patriots were able to get off three more shots in the remainder of the period, one of which was saved to give keep Virginia ahead 2-1.
STAT BREAKDOWN
-Virginia led 10-5 in shots after the first half and finished the match with a 17-12 advantage.
-Jeff Caldwell needed to make three saves in the first half for Virginia and ended with four. Steffen Kraus recorded three for Mason.
-Mason had only one corner kick in the match while Virginia had five.
-Corriveau had a game-high five shots while Dirks had four for the Patriots.
